Tom Ford Designed/New York Yacht Club Wedding, Newport, RI: Rickie & Derick

We had a wonderful time last week shooting a beautiful Tom Ford designed wedding for Rickie De Sole and Derek Webster at The New York Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island. Rickie is the Senior Accessories Editor at VOGUE Magazine and Tom Ford graciously designed and curated an amazing custom collection for the occasion. As amazing as all that was, I want to thank my incredibly talented wife Malia, who quietly rallied for our shoot on her own birthday… making sure we all had the very best support on the planet for a very special wedding.  The ceremony was held at The St. George’s School Chapel in Middletown, RI, with an exquisite reception at Harbour Court overlooking Newport Harbor.

Details, details, details.

Tom Ford Custom handmade dress

An unbelievable handmade dress by Tom Ford.

Domenico De Sole

The bride’s father, Domenico De Sole. Waiting patiently…

I’ve never been a big fan of the bride-on-the-staircase photographs, but when the light is good, and the dress is amazing, and she really was just coming down the stairs… I couldn’t resist.

I saw this pool of light and just waited for her to walk through it. She looks incredible: real, classy and timeless. Tom Ford looking on.

Her dad walking her down the aisle.

One last look. One last deep breath.

If you’ve ever been to The St. George’s School chapel, you’ll know that the center aisle is about 300 feet long. For us to be unobtrusive, we stationed Malia up on the balcony with a VERY large, very fast lens and spent over 3 hours beforehand choreographing how, where, and when we would shoot. We never used flash during the ceremony; we never walked down the aisle: but we got the shots.  That wasn’t easy, but the time and effort invested in advance meant that the guests could enjoy the ceremony uninterrupted, while the bride and groom still receive the photos that they will cherish forever.

Husband and Wife!

Their first chance to be alone following the ceremony.

A precious moment captured… before the party begins.

And it didn’t take very long for the party to begin: first dance.

Beautiful and tasty!

So genuinely happy just to be together.

Tent with amazing details and floral arrangements.

Just a candid moment caught during one of the toasts.

They only danced alone together for about 3 minutes. When the invitation came to join them on the dance floor, these guests charged. I can’t remember the last wedding that had more people dancing from the beginning to the end of the reception.

A beautiful deck was built off the tent at the edge of Newport Harbor.

Sunset.

The guests had no fun. I swear. Here, the Creative Director for Tom Ford International gets his boogie on.

A slow exposure of the tent.

Sparkler sendoff at the end of the evening.

As a fellow sailor and Captain, I appreciated the nautical departure as well as the nod to a Maine boatbuilding company (and one of our clients, Hinckley Yachts) as the bride and groom left aboard a beautiful picnic boat.

To the bride and groom (not to mention their family and friends), thanks so much for having us!  It was a wonderful day, and a very real and beautiful story to document. Tom Ford and his team were wonderful to collaborate with! This wedding will be another featured wedding of us for VOGUE Magazine. Check the September issue for more photos! Also, mahalo to Malia for being such an incredibly talented art director, photographer and fantastic wife.  She thought nothing of spending her birthday with our clients to ensure that they received the very best!!  Your efforts made an enormous difference!
